Excessive sweating can cause disturbances in sleep due to frequent awakenings caused by the discomfort of wet clothing. Excessive sleep sweating is associated with a number of underlying disorders such as stress, diabetes, epilepsy, menopause, Parasomnias, and obstructive sleep apnea.
Excessive sweating is a prevalent symptom of sleep apnea due to the body’s extra work expenditure to breathe caused by the narrowing of airway passages. The struggle to breathe causes the body to heat up and in turn release sweat.
Medications can be used to help alleviate some of the causes of excessive sweating. Other remedies that can help include turning up the air conditioning, using only a thin blanket, showering before sleep, opening a window, and/or the use of a CPAP for treatment of sleep apnea.
